A strong AI portrait can be ruined by one hand with six fingers, a fused thumb, or a product that seems to melt into the palm. Regenerating the whole image is tempting, but it also risks changing the face, outfit, lighting, and composition that already work.
A better approach is to prevent obvious hand errors during generation, then repair only the hand and its contact area when something goes wrong. This keeps the successful parts of the image intact and turns hand correction into a controlled edit rather than another full roll of the dice.
Identify the type of hand error first
Different problems need different corrections. Check whether the image has:
- an extra, missing, or duplicated finger
- fused fingers or a thumb attached at the wrong angle
- a wrist that bends unnaturally
- one hand blending into the other
- fingers passing through a product, cup, phone, or clothing
- inconsistent scale between the hand and face
- a correct hand that still looks detached from the pose
Don't focus only on finger count. A five-fingered hand can still look wrong if the grip, wrist, or contact shadow makes no physical sense.
Give each hand one clear job
Hands often fail when the prompt asks for a complicated action without explaining what each hand is doing. "Woman presenting a product" leaves the pose open to interpretation. The model may invent two competing grips, hide fingers behind the packaging, or place the object at an awkward angle.
Describe the visible action in plain language:
Her right hand holds the bottle at chest height, fingers wrapped naturally around its right side, thumb visible on the left side. Her left arm rests by her side. The bottle label faces the camera and remains unobstructed.
This is more useful than a long list of anatomy keywords. State which hand acts, where it sits, what it touches, and whether the palm or back of the hand faces the camera.
For two-handed actions, define them separately:
Her left hand supports the base of the box. Her right hand rests lightly against the side. Both wrists are straight, the hands remain separate, and no fingers cover the front label.
Avoid giving the same hand several jobs. A person shouldn't be gripping a product, pointing at its logo, and brushing back their hair with one hand.
Choose an easier camera angle
Some compositions create unnecessary ambiguity. A hand aimed directly toward the camera is heavily foreshortened. Crossed arms, interlocked fingers, and hands partly hidden behind products also make the shape harder to read.
For a first successful frame, use a three-quarter view with the hand visible from the side. Keep fingers separated enough to inspect, but don't ask for an exaggerated spread. Place the object at a natural distance from the body and keep the wrist within the frame.
Once the simple version works, use it as a reference for a more difficult camera angle. This controlled progression is similar to the workflow for generating multiple poses of the same AI character, where an approved intermediate view reduces the number of changes made at once.
Use a pose reference for complex grips
Text can describe a grip, but a reference image communicates the hand position, object angle, and body balance together. Use a photo you own or have permission to use. The reference should show an unobstructed wrist and a product with roughly similar dimensions to the final object.
Tell the model what the reference controls:
Use image 1 for the character's identity and outfit. Use image 2 only for the right-hand pose, wrist angle, and body position. Keep the character's face unchanged. Replace the placeholder object with the supplied product from image 3.
Without those roles, the model may borrow the person, styling, or product from the wrong image. Runway's official image reference guide documents using one or multiple references to carry characters, objects, and visual traits into a new image. Exact controls vary by tool, but separating identity, pose, and product inputs is a useful general practice.
Repair the hand locally
If the face, body, and scene are already good, don't regenerate the complete image. Select or mask the damaged hand, including a little of the wrist and any area where the fingers touch an object. The edit needs enough surrounding context to rebuild the connection naturally.
Use a direct instruction:
Replace only the selected right hand with a natural adult right hand gripping the bottle. Five anatomically plausible fingers, relaxed wrist, realistic contact with the bottle, consistent skin tone and lighting. Keep the face, body, product, label, outfit, background, and composition unchanged.
Google's image-generation documentation describes this as semantic masking: specify the element to change and request that the rest of the image remain unchanged. Adobe's Generative Fill instructions likewise use a selection to define the area that should be altered.
The mask matters as much as the prompt. If it covers only a single malformed finger, the edit may struggle to reconnect it to the palm. If it covers half the body, the model has room to change the pose or clothing. Include the faulty hand, wrist transition, and contact area, then keep the selection tight.
Fix the grip and product together
A hand holding a branded product is a connected problem. Correcting only the fingers can bend the package or redraw its label. Correcting only the product can change the grip.
Use the original product image as a reference and state the non-negotiable details: shape, colour, cap, label layout, logo, and orientation. Ask for the fingers to wrap around a side or back surface that does not hide important text. If the contact still looks weak, add a small, soft contact shadow where the fingers meet the object.

Know when prompt negatives help
Some generators accept negative prompts, while others do not. Where supported, a short negative list such as "extra fingers, fused fingers, duplicated hands, broken wrist" may reduce common failures. It is not a substitute for a clear action, suitable framing, and a targeted repair.
Avoid stuffing the prompt with every hand-related defect you can name. Long contradictory instructions can distract from the actual pose. Describe the desired result first, add a few relevant exclusions if the tool supports them, and judge the output.
Review at three sizes
Check the repaired image as a thumbnail, at normal display size, and at 100 percent.
At thumbnail size, confirm that the gesture reads naturally. At normal size, inspect the wrist, finger spacing, hand scale, and product contact. At 100 percent, look for duplicated nails, disappearing fingertips, texture seams, label damage, and sharp edges around the edited region.
Then compare the new version with the original. A technically better hand is not an improvement if the character's face, skin tone, jewellery, sleeve, or product has changed. If the skin texture also needs work, make that a separate edit using the workflow in how to make AI skin look realistic.
A repeatable hand-fixing workflow
Start with one clear hand action and a camera angle that shows the grip. Use a pose reference for complex gestures. If the result fails, keep the good image and mask only the hand, wrist, and contact area. Repair the hand and product relationship together, then inspect the edit at several sizes.
