A strong AI image is not always framed for the place you need to publish it. A square portrait may need to become a vertical Story, while a product shot may need extra width for a website banner. Cropping cannot create missing space, and stretching distorts the scene.
The right technique is outpainting, also called generative expand. It keeps the existing image as the visual anchor and generates new content beyond its borders. The difficult part is extending the scene without changing the person, product or composition that already works.
Start by deciding what must stay untouched
Identify the protected part of the image. For a portrait, this might include the face, hair, outfit, hands and body proportions. For a product image, protect the entire item, including its logo, packaging, edges, reflections and contact shadow.
Outpainting should add canvas around the subject. It should not redesign the subject at the same time. If your tool offers layers, masks or a setting that preserves original pixels, use it.
Work from the largest, cleanest source available. Compression, blur and jagged edges make it harder for the new area to match. Fix structural errors first, then expand and finish using the decision process in AI upscaling versus regeneration.
Choose the final aspect ratio first
Set the destination before generating. Common ratios include 9:16 for Stories and vertical ads, 4:5 for portrait feed posts, 1:1 for square galleries and 16:9 for covers or website sections.
The target determines which borders need new content. A square portrait becoming 9:16 may need space above and below. A banner usually needs more on the left and right.
Place the subject deliberately within the new frame. Extra space on one side can hold copy or a call to action. Symmetrical expansion works when the subject should remain centred.
Expand the canvas, not the subject
Create the new canvas around the original image and keep the accepted pixels locked. Adobe’s current Generative Expand instructions use the Crop tool to drag beyond the original boundaries before generating the missing area. Other editors use different controls, but the principle is the same.
If the tool supports masks, select only the transparent expansion. Avoid masking across the face, product or detailed clothing unless a repair is required. Even a small overlap can invite the model to reinterpret an eye, hairstyle, sleeve or label.
For a large change, expand in stages. First establish the floor, wall, sky or room. Approve that result, then extend again. Smaller steps make it easier to catch perspective or lighting errors.
Prompt the missing area, not the whole image
A common mistake is to describe the complete original subject again. A prompt such as “woman in a red jacket standing in a modern apartment” may encourage the model to generate another person or alter the existing one.
Describe only what should continue beyond the border.
For a portrait:
Continue the softly lit apartment background above and below the original frame. Match the existing warm window light, camera perspective and shallow depth of field. Add no people, faces or text.
For a product photo:
Extend the pale stone surface and neutral studio wall to the left and right. Continue the existing shadow direction and soft daylight. Keep the space uncluttered. Add no products, labels, props or text.
For an outdoor image:
Continue the same beach, horizon and overcast sky beyond the frame. Match the horizon height, colour, grain and lens blur. Do not add people, buildings or objects.
If the scene is simple, try an empty prompt. Some tools can infer a plain wall, sky or studio sweep from the visible edges. Compare several outputs rather than forcing one weak variation through repeated edits.
Keep important details away from the boundary
Outpainting is easier when the border passes through a simple background. A clean wall, floor, sky, blurred room or studio paper gives the model consistent colour and texture to continue.
It becomes harder when the border cuts through a face, fingers, patterned clothing, a product label, a mirror or a strong directional shadow. If an important detail touches the edge, first make a controlled local repair or reposition the original inside a larger canvas. Do not ask the model to invent the missing half of a real product and present it as accurate.
For product assets, use the same checks required to preserve logos and labels in AI product photos. The background may be synthetic, but the item for sale must still match the approved reference.
Match perspective, lighting and texture
A seamless join depends on more than colour. The generated region must continue the geometry and physical logic of the original.
Check horizon and vanishing lines first. Floors, shelves, windows and tabletops should continue toward the same vanishing point. A different camera height can make the added room look tilted.
Then check light direction. Shadows and highlights should agree with the source. If light falls from the left, the extension should not suggest a second strong light from the right.
Finally, compare texture and noise. A sharp extension beside a compressed original creates a visible border. So does a smooth wall beside a photograph with natural grain. Apply final noise, colour and sharpness adjustments across the complete image.
Fix common outpainting failures
The subject changes or duplicates
Undo the result and reduce the generated area to the background. Remove descriptions of the person or product. Ask for an uncluttered background continuation with no additional subjects.
The seam is visible
Regenerate a narrow overlap around the join, then inspect repeated textures, straight lines and colour shifts. A local blend can work better than replacing the entire extension.
The scene becomes too busy
Simplify the prompt. Props are not required because the canvas is larger. Empty space often makes a portrait, product or advertisement easier to use.
The new area looks softer
Complete the composition before the final upscale. Processing the finished frame together is usually more consistent than separately enlarging the original and extension.
Outpainting is not background replacement
Background replacement swaps part or all of the existing environment. Outpainting adds content outside the current frame. Use replacement when the setting is wrong. Use outpainting when the setting works but the crop is too tight or the aspect ratio is wrong.
If the environment needs to change while preserving a person, follow the workflow for changing an AI image background without changing the person. Replacing and extending the scene in one large generation increases the variables that can fail.
A reliable export workflow
Use this order:
- Approve the original subject, product and composition.
- Create a canvas at the final aspect ratio.
- Position the original without stretching it.
- Protect all accepted pixels.
- Generate only the missing borders.
- Check identity, product accuracy, perspective, light and seams.
- Make small local repairs.
- Apply colour, grain and final upscaling across the complete image.
- Export a clean master plus channel-specific copies.
Treat the original image as evidence and the new border as a controlled addition. When the subject remains protected and the prompt describes only the missing space, outpainting lets one strong image work across several formats without rebuilding it from scratch.
