Waxy skin is one of the quickest ways to make an AI portrait look artificial. The usual reaction is to add more detail, more pores, or more sharpening. That can replace one problem with another: a face that looks covered in sandpaper.
Realistic skin comes from several cues working together. Texture matters, but so do colour variation, soft facial hair, highlights, shadows, and the amount of detail that makes sense for the framing. The goal isn't perfect skin or maximum texture. It is believable skin for the person, lighting, camera distance, and style of the image.
Start by identifying the actual problem
Zoom out before you zoom in. Ask what makes the face feel artificial at normal viewing size.
Plastic or waxy skin usually has uniform colour, smooth tonal transitions, and broad shiny highlights. Overprocessed skin has hard pores, crunchy eyelashes, halos around features, or noise that covers both the face and background. Flat skin may contain detail but still look computer-generated because the lighting does not describe the shape of the face.
These problems need different fixes. Texture won't repair flat lighting, and grain won't create believable pores.
Remove words that encourage beauty-filter skin
Prompts often create the problem before the image is generated. Terms such as "flawless skin," "porcelain skin," "perfect complexion," "airbrushed," and "glamour retouching" can push a portrait toward a polished cosmetic look. That may suit a campaign concept, but it works against documentary or creator-style realism.
Replace those phrases with a small set of observable details:
Natural skin texture, subtle pores, gentle colour variation across the cheeks and forehead, fine facial hair, soft under-eye detail, restrained highlights, minimal retouching.
Choose only the details visible at the intended camera distance. A waist-up social photo needs less pore language than a beauty close-up.
Use light that reveals form without exaggerating texture
Lighting changes how much skin detail the viewer can see. Soft window light from slightly to one side is a useful starting point because it gives the face gradual highlight and shadow transitions. A mild three-quarter angle can reveal cheek and forehead texture without making every pore dominant.
Very flat frontal light tends to hide texture. Hard side light can do the opposite, making normal surface detail look severe. If the result feels synthetic, adjust the light description before adding more detail words.
Try a prompt direction such as:
Soft daylight from a window camera-left, gentle shadow on the far cheek, natural highlight roll-off, realistic skin texture, neutral colour balance.
Keep the light physically coherent. Asking for a bright frontal beauty light, dramatic side shadows, and a dim room in the same prompt gives the model conflicting instructions.
Describe variation, not just pores
Real skin isn't one uniform material. The nose, forehead, cheeks, lips, and under-eye area don't carry identical texture or shine. A prompt that only says "visible pores" can produce evenly distributed dots across the face.
Use variation as the main instruction:
Fine pores around the nose and inner cheeks, smoother under-eye skin, subtle warmth in the cheeks, slight natural redness, soft lip texture, no plastic sheen.
A few small imperfections can help when they fit the subject, but don't build realism by piling on freckles, blemishes, wrinkles, and acne that weren't part of the character. Those features can change identity and age as well as texture.
Match detail to the shot
Camera distance sets a natural ceiling for visible detail. In a close beauty portrait, fine skin texture, individual eyebrow hairs, and catchlights can be visible. In a full-body image, insisting on microscopic pores may cause the generator to invent harsh facial noise or distort small features.
The same principle applies to depth of field. If the face is meant to be sharply focused, don't simultaneously request heavy motion blur across the subject. Use a simple photographic description that supports the composition:
Chest-up portrait, eye-level camera, 50mm photographic look, face in sharp focus, softly blurred background, natural window light.
Make targeted edits instead of regenerating everything
If the face and composition already work, edit the skin problem locally. A useful edit instruction is:
Keep the person's facial structure, expression, eye colour, hairstyle, and proportions unchanged. Adjust only the skin rendering: restore subtle natural texture, gentle colour variation, fine facial hair, and realistic highlights. Do not add heavy makeup or alter identity.
Specific preservation language matters. Google's official image-generation guidance recommends describing critical details, including a face, in detail when they must remain unchanged during an edit. Change one variable at a time. First repair texture, then correct colour or lighting. A broad request to fix the face, makeup, pose, hair, background, and outfit makes new errors harder to diagnose.
Don't use grain as a substitute for skin texture
Film grain is a frame-level effect. Skin texture follows the face and changes by region. Strong global noise may disguise smooth skin while making hair, eyes, clothing, and the background dirty.
If you use grain, apply it lightly after the portrait already looks convincing. In a photo editor, local controls are safer than global sharpening. Keep the adjustment restrained and inspect the image at both 100 percent and normal display size.
Upscale only after the skin looks right
An upscaler can improve edge definition and output size, but it can't decide what the subject's skin should have looked like. It may preserve waxy smoothness or sharpen artificial dots.

Keep the look consistent across a character set
Once you have one convincing portrait, treat it as a reference rather than starting over. Reuse the same short skin description, keep lighting within a related family, and compare new images side by side. This is especially useful when creating multiple poses of the same AI character, because pose changes can also alter facial rendering.
A reusable character note might read:
Natural medium-texture skin, subtle pores around nose and cheeks, soft under-eye detail, light freckles across the nose, gentle cheek warmth, minimal makeup, no smoothing filter.

A practical realism check
Review the final image in three passes. At normal size, check whether the face feels believable. At 100 percent, look for repeated pore patterns, halos, noisy irises, broken eyelashes, and abrupt texture changes. Then compare it with the approved character reference to catch changes in age, facial structure, freckles, or skin tone.
If the face is smooth but the light is flat, fix the light. If texture is harsh, reduce detail and sharpening. If the image only looks realistic when heavily grained, return to the generation or edit step. The most convincing result usually comes from moderate texture, coherent lighting, and a face that stays true to the character.
