A believable selfie should feel captured, not art-directed. When an AI image looks like a beauty campaign with a phone vaguely implied outside the frame, viewers notice the mismatch immediately.
The fix is not to keep adding “photorealistic” or “ultra-detailed.” A better prompt explains how a real phone photo was taken: where the camera sits, what the arm is doing, how the room is lit, and which small imperfections belong in the shot.
Start with a clear type of selfie
“Selfie” can describe several different images. Pick one before you write the rest of the prompt:
- Front-camera selfie: The subject looks toward a phone held at arm’s length. The phone usually stays outside the image.
- Mirror selfie: The phone appears in the reflection, often covering part of the face or torso.
- Creator-style product selfie: The subject holds or uses a product while addressing the camera.
- Group selfie: One person holds the camera while everyone leans toward the lens.
Combining formats produces confused geometry. Asking for a visible phone, direct eye contact, and a front-camera perspective may cause the model to invent a second device or place the hand incorrectly.
Use a reference image for identity, not composition
If the person must stay recognisable across a series, start with a clean identity reference. Choose an image with an unobstructed face, neutral lighting, visible hairline, and limited retouching. A front view is the safest starting point. A three-quarter reference can help when the new angle turns away from the camera.
Separate the fixed identity from the desired scene in your instructions:

Describe phone-camera perspective
A phone held close to the face does not produce the same perspective as a portrait photographed from several metres away. Nearby features appear more prominent, so a flat, compressed portrait can feel wrong for a selfie.
Use visible capture cues rather than a long equipment list:
- phone held slightly above eye level
- camera about an arm’s length away
- mild wide-angle perspective
- one shoulder closer to the lens
- forearm entering from a lower corner
- vertical 4:5 or 9:16 framing
- slight tilt instead of perfect symmetry
Keep the effect mild. Extreme distortion can enlarge the nose, forehead, hand, or product. If that happens, request more camera distance and less wide-angle perspective.
Make the lighting belong to the location
Realistic lighting has a source. Name it and describe its direction.
“Soft daylight from a window on the left” is more useful than “beautiful lighting.” A bathroom mirror selfie might mix a warm ceiling light with cooler window light. Outdoors, open shade creates softer facial contrast than direct midday sun. Google’s mobile filming guidance also recommends soft, even light to help a phone sensor retain detail.
Avoid stacking incompatible instructions such as ring light, golden-hour sun, fluorescent bathroom light, and cinematic rim light. One main source and one believable secondary source are enough.
Check the eyes after generation. Catchlights should agree with the stated light direction. If the face is bright on one side but the eye reflections suggest two frontal studio lights, the picture will feel assembled.
Prompt natural skin and expression
AI selfies often fail because the face is too polished. Words such as “flawless,” “perfect,” and “airbrushed” invite smooth skin and beauty-ad styling. Replace them with ordinary photographic details:
- visible pores and fine facial texture
- subtle under-eye detail
- slight colour variation in the cheeks
- a few flyaway hairs
- natural lip texture
- relaxed mouth and uneven smile
Do not request every imperfection at once. Heavy grain, motion blur, lens smudges, compression, and low light can create a deliberate “fake candid.” Add one or two details that suit the setting.

Build the prompt in six parts
A reliable selfie prompt can follow this order:
- Identity: Who must remain recognisable?
- Selfie type: Front camera, mirror, product, or group?
- Setting: Where is the photo being taken?
- Capture: Camera height, distance, crop, and orientation.
- Light: Main source, direction, and softness.
- Reality cues: Expression, texture, and framing imperfections.
Use this template:
Preserve [identity features]. Create a casual [selfie type] in [setting]. The phone is [position], about [distance] from the subject, with [perspective and crop]. Light comes from [source and direction]. The subject has [expression and action]. Keep [two or three natural details]. The result should look like an ordinary phone photo, not a studio portrait.
Casual indoor selfie prompt
Preserve the reference person’s face, skin tone, dark wavy hair, and facial proportions. Create a casual front-camera selfie in a lived-in kitchen in the morning. Hold the phone slightly above eye level at arm’s length, with mild wide-angle perspective and an imperfect chest-up crop. Soft window light comes from the right. Use a small relaxed smile, natural skin texture, a few flyaway hairs, and gentle background softness. No studio lighting or beauty-ad finish.
Outdoor creator selfie prompt
Keep the same person and hairstyle as the reference. Create a vertical outdoor selfie on a quiet city street in open shade. The camera is at arm’s length and off-centre, with one shoulder closer to the lens. The subject looks into the front camera with a conversational expression. Use soft daylight, realistic facial texture, slight background motion, and an unforced crop. Leave distant text unreadable rather than inventing words.
Product selfie prompt
Preserve the person’s identity and the product’s exact shape, colour, label, and cap. Create a casual bathroom mirror selfie with the product near chest height. The phone is visible in one hand and the product in the other. Use warm overhead light with soft window fill. Keep believable fingers, one consistent mirror reflection, and ordinary bathroom details. Do not redesign or duplicate the package.

Change one variable per generation
Generate a small batch from one prompt, choose the strongest frame, then change only the weakest element. If identity is good but the result feels too formal, loosen the crop and expression. If the scene works but the face drifts, strengthen the reference. If the hand is wrong, repair that region instead of rewriting the full prompt.
Changing the pose, setting, light, outfit, expression, crop, and camera angle in one attempt hides the cause of failure.
Check the image before you publish it
Zoom in and inspect five areas:
- Identity: Do the face shape, eyes, nose, hairline, and skin tone still match?
- Capture logic: Could a real person hold the phone at this angle?
- Hands and objects: Are fingers, grips, jewellery, and products coherent?
- Light and reflections: Do shadows, catchlights, mirrors, and shiny surfaces agree?
- Background: Are doors, tiles, railings, signs, and repeated people plausible?
A realistic AI selfie is not the image with the most detail. It is the one in which every detail supports the same simple story about how the photo was taken. Start with ordinary capture conditions, keep the identity reference clear, and make local corrections after you have a strong frame.
