Mirror selfies are harder for image generators than ordinary portraits. The model must place a person, phone, hand, room, and reflected view into one coherent image. When those parts disagree, you get two phones, impossible fingers, a duplicated body, or a subject looking in the wrong direction.

Understand what the camera is seeing

In a real mirror selfie, the phone’s camera points toward the mirror. The photograph records the reflection of the subject, phone, and the room behind them.

Prompts often mix this with front-camera language. Avoid “front-camera selfie” and “phone outside the frame.” State the setup directly:

Choose one gaze:

  • At the phone screen: feels like someone checking the composition.

A vague instruction such as “looking at the camera in the mirror” can produce crossed eyes or a face aimed between two targets.

Match the mirror to the crop

Pick one plausible composition: chest-up bathroom selfie, waist-up bedroom selfie, full-length outfit selfie, or close product selfie beside a vanity.

A full-length image needs a tall mirror, enough floor space, and a phone position that does not block the outfit. A small bathroom mirror cannot show the subject from head to toe. Use 4:5 for a person-led feed post and 9:16 for a Story, Reel cover, or vertical ad.

Start with a clean identity reference if the person must remain recognisable. Let it establish the face, skin tone, hair, and body proportions. Let the prompt control the mirror, pose, phone, and room:

Avoid a reference with a hand covering the jaw or a heavy beauty filter. Both make identity preservation harder.

Build the scene in seven parts

Write the prompt in this order:

  1. Identity: Which traits stay fixed?
  2. Mirror: What size and shape is it?
  3. Subject: Where is the person and how are they posed?
  4. Phone: Which hand holds it, at what height, and what does it cover?
  5. Gaze: Screen, camera lens, or reflection?
  6. Room and light: What appears behind the reflected subject?

Preserve the reference person’s facial proportions, skin tone, brown eyes, and shoulder-length dark hair. Create a waist-up bathroom mirror selfie. Fix common mirror selfie errors

Two phones appear

The prompt probably mixes a visible mirror phone with front-camera language or gives the phone several positions. Remove every camera instruction except:

If the extra device remains, mask and remove it locally. Do not regenerate a good face and pose to repair a background object.

The phone floats or the hand breaks

Give the hand a simple job:

Right hand wrapped naturally around the lower half of the phone, thumb along the side, wrist straight.

The person looks at the wrong place

“Eyes focused on the phone screen” is clearer than “looking naturally.” For eye contact, ask the subject to look at the phone’s rear camera lens in the reflection. Check that both pupils aim toward the same point.

A second body appears

Use “one subject visible only as a mirror reflection” when the person should not appear outside the glass. If the mirror edge is in frame, say which body part is visible outside it. Otherwise the model may interpret the scene as two people.

Text and logos are wrong

Do not rely on generation for important text inside a reflection. Decide whether physical realism or readable brand copy matters more, then composite the approved label. For casual background signs, request blank, obscured, or unreadable text.

Keep imperfections believable

A mirror does not need obvious dirt to look real. One faint smudge, subtle edge reflection, or mild phone-camera noise may help. Fingerprints, dust, glare, blur, grain, distortion, and low-light noise together look staged.

Create a small batch from one prompt. Choose the frame with the best identity and overall geometry, then inspect the phone, grip, gaze, mirror edges, floor lines, background, and labels.

Change one variable at a time. Correct the phone position first, then the gaze, then local anatomy. Broad rewrites make it hard to know why a result improved or failed.

The final test is simple: could someone stand in that room, hold the phone that way, and capture the exact frame? If yes, the image has a much better chance of feeling like a real mirror selfie.
