How to Keep the Same Hairstyle on an AI Character

A practical workflow for preserving an AI character's hair colour, parting, length, texture, volume, and silhouette across scenes and poses.

A character can keep the same face and still look inconsistent when the hair changes. A centre part becomes a side part, loose waves turn into curls, the length moves above the shoulders, or a ponytail appears in one scene and vanishes in the next.

“Long brown hair” is not a fixed hairstyle. It leaves most of the design open to interpretation. To keep an AI character's hair consistent, define the style as a repeatable specification, show it from useful angles, and separate intentional movement from actual redesign.

Write a hairstyle specification

Describe the hairstyle using features you can inspect, not mood words such as glamorous, trendy, or effortless.

A practical specification should cover:

  • colour and undertone
  • length and where the ends fall
  • parting position
  • texture or curl pattern
  • fringe or face-framing pieces
  • volume at the roots and sides
  • shape at the back
  • how the hair sits around the ears and shoulders
  • permanent accessories, if any

For example:

Dark chocolate-brown hair with a neutral undertone, centre part, collarbone length, loose S-shaped waves, medium density, low root volume, two short face-framing pieces ending at the cheekbones, ends resting in front of both shoulders, no fringe, no clips or visible extensions.

Keep this hairstyle note separate from scene instructions. Reuse it unchanged while varying location, pose, outfit, or lighting.

Use references that actually show the hair

A front portrait cannot describe the back of a hairstyle. A side profile may hide the opposite side. Build a small set that removes those gaps.

Useful views include a front or three-quarter portrait, one clean profile, and a back or over-the-shoulder view when the rear shape matters. The AI character reference sheet workflow explains how to create and approve these plates without allowing one incorrect angle to redefine the character.

Choose images where the hair is visible against a contrasting, simple background. Avoid hats, heavy wind, hands covering the head, deep shadow, or clothing that hides the ends. If the hair is black, a black background or jacket makes its outline difficult to read.

Google's current image-generation documentation recommends including previously generated images when building different character angles. The same principle applies to hair: supply the approved view that best explains the angle you want rather than forcing the model to invent unseen geometry.

Tell each reference what to control

When you use several images, explain their roles. Otherwise a pose image may contribute the wrong hairstyle or a style image may alter the face.

Try:

Image 1 defines the exact character identity and front hairstyle. Image 2 defines only the approved side and back shape of the same hairstyle. Image 3 guides only the pose and camera framing. Keep the face, hair colour, centre part, collarbone length, wave pattern, volume, and face-framing pieces from images 1 and 2. Do not copy the person or hair from image 3.

Separate hairstyle from hair movement

Consistent hair does not mean every strand must occupy the same position. A walking shot, windy street, seated portrait, and over-the-shoulder pose should create believable movement.

Lock the design, then describe the temporary state:

Preserve the exact centre-parted, collarbone-length loose-wave hairstyle. A light breeze moves a few strands toward camera-right, but the parting, length, density, wave pattern, and overall silhouette remain unchanged.

For a seated indoor image:

Same approved hairstyle, with the ends resting naturally over the front of both shoulders. No change to the cut, parting, curl pattern, or volume.

“Windblown hair” alone can become a new cut. “Hair tied back” requires the model to invent how the style looks when gathered. If you need a ponytail, bun, wet look, or hat, treat it as a new approved hairstyle variation.

Keep camera angle and cropping in mind

A hairstyle can appear shorter in a close crop, flatter in profile, or wider from behind. Do not reject a result based only on visible length if the ends fall outside the frame.

Compare stable landmarks: parting, hairline, fringe, where face-framing pieces end, the shape around the ears, and the silhouette relative to the jaw and shoulders.

For profile views, use an approved profile reference. For back views, use a back plate. If neither exists, create that neutral view first, then use it in the final scene. This is safer than generating an unseen hairstyle angle inside a complex campaign image.

Avoid changing too many styling variables at once

Hair drift often happens when the prompt also changes wardrobe, makeup, expression, camera, lighting, background, and pose. The model has many visual decisions to solve, so fixed details may be reinterpreted.

Build the image in stages:

  1. Generate the new pose with the approved hair and a plain background.
  2. Confirm the face, parting, length, texture, and silhouette.
  3. Add the final outfit.
  4. Change the background.
  5. Apply any local hair or edge correction.

If the hairstyle changes after the outfit edit, return to the approved pose and redo only the wardrobe.

The same discipline applies when using the outfit-change workflow. Keep the head and hair outside the editable area unless the clothing must overlap them.

Repair hair locally when the rest of the image works

Do not regenerate a successful face, pose, and scene because one side of the hair is too long. Mask only the incorrect hair region, plus a small amount of surrounding context, then describe the repair.

Correct only the hair on camera-left to match the approved reference: same collarbone length, loose S-shaped waves, medium density, and centre part. Keep the face, ear, neck, clothing, pose, lighting, background, and all other hair unchanged.

Hair edges need special care. Flyaways and fine strands are partly transparent, so a hard mask can create a cutout shape. Similar edge principles apply in other editors: isolate the area carefully and avoid replacing more of the head than necessary.

Approve hair as part of the character identity

Review new images beside the original anchor and hairstyle plates. Check:

  • parting location and width
  • hairline and temple shape
  • colour and highlights
  • length at front, side, and back
  • texture and curl size
  • overall volume and silhouette
  • fringe and face-framing pieces
  • permanent accessories

Reject a redesign before it becomes the next reference. If the same error keeps appearing, strengthen the missing view or make the hairstyle specification more concrete.
