An outfit swap should change the clothes, not the person wearing them. Yet a broad instruction such as “put her in a red dress” can also alter the face, body shape, pose, hair, lighting, and background.
The reliable method is a targeted edit. Lock the identity and scene, isolate the clothing, describe the replacement precisely, and review the result against the original. This works for AI influencers, fashion concepts, creator posts, and campaign variations where the character must remain recognizable.
Choose a source image that shows the outfit clearly
Start with an approved image of the character. The face should be sharp, the clothing should not be hidden by crossed arms or large objects, and the body outline should be easy to read.
A front-facing or three-quarter pose is usually easier than an extreme twist. If you need to replace trousers or a full-length dress, use an image that shows the whole garment and both legs. A cropped portrait does not give the editor enough information to build a reliable lower-body outfit.
Keep the original file untouched. Use it as the visual truth for:
- face shape and expression
- apparent age and skin tone
- hairstyle and makeup
- shoulder width and body proportions
- pose and hand position
- background, crop, and camera angle
If any of these details changes, the output is not a clean wardrobe edit.
Decide whether you need a prompt or a clothing reference
A text prompt is enough when you want a general garment, such as a black blazer, white cotton shirt, or blue evening dress. Describe the construction, fit, fabric, colour, length, neckline, sleeves, and visible details.
Use a clothing reference when the design itself matters. This is useful for a particular jacket, patterned dress, uniform, or branded garment. Explain the job of each image:
Use image 1 as the exact character and composition. Use image 2 only as the clothing reference. Replace the character's current top with the shirt from image 2. Keep the face, hair, body shape, pose, hands, trousers, background, lighting, and camera framing unchanged.
Google's current image editing guidance demonstrates this kind of role assignment. Its example adds a supplied logo to a shirt while explicitly keeping the woman's face and features unchanged and making the design follow the fabric folds.
A reference helps communicate design, but it does not guarantee an exact commercial product reproduction. Check seams, fastenings, print placement, colour, and logos before using the result publicly.
Mask only the clothing area
If your editor supports selections or masks, cover the garment you want to replace and as little else as possible. Do not include the face, hair, exposed arms, hands, or background unless the new clothing must overlap those areas.
Leave a small amount of room around the garment boundary so the editor can create a natural neckline, cuffs, hem, and fabric edge. A mask that stops too far inside the old clothes can leave fragments behind. A mask that extends across the neck or jaw may invite the model to rebuild the face.
Photoshop's official Generative Fill instructions use the same local-edit principle: define the area to transform, then describe the new content. Tool interfaces differ, but narrow edit scope remains useful.
For a layered outfit, work in stages. Change the shirt first, approve it, then add a jacket. Trying to replace a top, trousers, shoes, jewellery, and bag in one generation makes errors harder to trace.
Write the prompt as change plus preservation
An outfit-editing prompt needs two parts. The first describes what changes. The second lists what stays fixed.
Try this structure:
Replace only the black T-shirt with a fitted cream linen blouse, long sleeves, pointed collar, concealed buttons, natural fabric folds, tucked into the existing trousers. Keep the character's face, expression, skin tone, hairstyle, makeup, body proportions, pose, hands, trousers, jewellery, background, lighting, and framing exactly unchanged.
Avoid rebuilding the full scene in the prompt. If the kitchen, pose, and camera already look right, describing them again may encourage the model to reinterpret them.
Use concrete clothing language. “Stylish luxury outfit” is subjective and gives the model too much freedom. “Single-breasted navy wool blazer, two buttons, narrow lapels, structured shoulders, hip length” is easier to inspect.
Preserve body shape instead of letting clothes redefine it
Loose, fitted, padded, cropped, and structured garments affect the visible silhouette. Some change is physically necessary, but the underlying character should remain stable.
Include body-preservation language when it matters:
Preserve the character's original shoulder width, waist position, torso length, arm length, and overall body proportions. Change only the clothing silhouette required by the garment.
Watch for a narrower waist, longer legs, enlarged chest, wider shoulders, or altered posture. These changes can make a familiar character look like someone else even when the face is close.
Do not use a creative outfit swap as proof of real-world garment fit. Generative editors create plausible pixels. They do not necessarily reproduce sizing, drape, material behaviour, or construction accurately enough for a buying decision. A dedicated virtual try-on workflow is more appropriate when a real garment and fit preview are the main purpose.
Handle hands, hair, and accessories separately
Clothing often overlaps difficult areas. Hair may fall over a collar. Hands may rest on pockets or hold a lapel. Necklaces may cross the neckline.
If the first result damages one of these details, keep the successful outfit and make a local repair. Do not regenerate the complete image. The workflow in how to fix AI-generated hands is useful when fingers merge into sleeves or pockets.
Decide whether accessories belong to the identity or the outfit. Permanent glasses or a signature necklace should be on the preservation list. A bag or belt chosen for one campaign can be changed later as a separate step.
Keep outfits consistent across a character set
Once one outfit is approved, create a reusable wardrobe note. Record garment type, colour, material, fit, fastenings, hems, footwear, jewellery, and any visible branding.
For example:
Cream linen blouse with pointed collar, concealed front buttons, long sleeves with single-button cuffs, tucked into high-waisted charcoal straight-leg trousers, slim black leather belt, black loafers, no visible logos.

Review the outfit swap in three passes
First, compare the face, hair, body, pose, and background against the original. These should remain stable.
Next, inspect clothing construction. Check the neckline, shoulders, sleeve length, cuffs, buttons, pockets, hem, folds, and overlaps with hands or hair. Patterns and logos should not melt across seams.
Finally, review the image at its intended size. A tiny collar error may be irrelevant in a full-body social post, while a warped logo or broken hand remains visible.
If the face changed, reduce the mask and strengthen the preservation instruction. If the body changed, restore the original proportions before refining fabric. If the clothes look vague, add a clearer garment reference or a more specific construction description. One controlled clothing edit at a time produces a more dependable character wardrobe than repeatedly generating the whole person from scratch.
