AI Video Camera Movement Prompts: How to Control the Shot

Learn how to prompt locked shots, pans, tilts, push-ins, tracking shots, orbits, handheld movement, and rack focus in AI-generated video.

A camera instruction can turn a static AI clip into a deliberate shot, but only if the prompt names the movement clearly. Phrases such as "cinematic camera" or "dynamic shot" describe a feeling, not a direction. The model still has to guess whether you want a pan, push-in, orbit, handheld frame, or no movement.

The practical fix is to choose one camera move for one reason, then describe its direction, speed, target, and stopping point.

Use a simple camera prompt structure

A useful camera-control prompt has four parts:

  1. Framing: close-up, medium shot, full-body shot, or wide shot
  2. Subject action: the movement happening inside the frame
  3. Camera movement: how the viewpoint changes
  4. Pace and stability: slow, gentle, smooth, handheld, locked, or abrupt

For example:

This is more precise than "cinematic product video with a moving camera." It gives the shot a starting composition, action, direction, and end point.

Runway's camera terms and prompt examples and Google's Veo video prompt guide both use filmmaking language to direct generated shots. The exact response varies between models, so treat every prompt as a controlled starting point rather than a guaranteed command.

Locked camera

A locked camera stays in one position. Use it when the subject's movement matters more than the viewpoint, or when you need stability for a face, product, background, or talking character.

A locked shot is often the safest first test for image-to-video. If the output still moves, reinforce what should move inside the frame. Runway's current image-to-video guidance suggests explicit wording such as "the locked-off camera remains perfectly still" and "minimal subject motion only."

Use it for direct-to-camera UGC, demonstrations, tutorials, reaction shots, and clips that will receive captions.

Pan left or right

A pan rotates the camera horizontally from a fixed position. It reveals something beside the current view without moving the camera through the space.

State what the movement begins on and where it finishes. "Camera pans right" gives direction, but not a destination. Pans work well for revealing a product range, moving across a room, or introducing multiple people.

Tilt up or down

A tilt rotates the camera vertically from a fixed position. It can reveal height or move from an object to a person's face.

Close-up begins on the shoes. The camera slowly tilts upward to reveal the full outfit and stops at a medium portrait. The person remains still.

Be careful when a tilt reveals parts of the body that aren't visible in the source. The model must invent that missing information. If clothing or proportions must remain exact, start from a wider frame that already contains them.

Push-in and pull-back

A push-in moves the camera closer to the subject. A pull-back moves it away. These terms are often more useful than "zoom" when you want the viewpoint to travel through the scene and create depth.

Use a push-in to emphasise a face, product detail, or reaction. Use a pull-back to reveal context. Keep the movement modest when identity or product accuracy matters, because a large viewpoint change gives the model more new information to generate.

Tracking shot

A tracking shot moves with the subject. The camera may follow from the side, behind, or in front while maintaining a similar distance.

Full-body tracking shot from the side. The creator walks slowly through a modern kitchen while carrying the product. The camera moves parallel at the same pace, keeping her centred.

Specify the relationship between the camera and subject. "Camera follows her" is less controlled than "camera tracks beside her at the same walking speed."

Tracking works for lifestyle scenes, fashion clips, and product-in-use sequences. It is demanding because the person, background, perspective, and body movement must remain coherent. Keep the clip short and inspect the face, hands, clothes, and product throughout.

Orbit shot

An orbit moves around a subject, changing the viewing angle while keeping it near the centre. It can make a product reveal feel polished, but asks the model to reconstruct sides that may not exist in the starting image.

The camera makes a slow quarter-orbit from the front-left to the front-right of the perfume bottle. The bottle remains stationary and keeps its exact shape, label, and colour. Soft studio lighting.

Handheld movement

Handheld doesn't need to mean chaotic. Small, irregular movement can make a creator-style clip feel as if it was recorded on a phone.

Use words such as subtle, restrained, or gentle. Handheld motion suits UGC-style ads, behind-the-scenes clips, and informal social posts. It is less suitable when packaging text must stay perfectly readable.

Rack focus

Rack focus changes which depth plane is sharp while the camera remains largely still. It guides attention between two subjects.

Both subjects need to be present in the starting composition. If you ask for focus on something that doesn't exist in frame, the model may invent or reshape it.

Don't combine every movement

A prompt asking for a pan, orbit, zoom, rack focus, and handheld shake in five seconds isn't more cinematic. It is less predictable.

Choose the movement that serves the shot:

  • Use locked camera when the performance or product must stay stable.
  • Use a pan or tilt to reveal something already present.
  • Use a push-in to emphasise one detail.
  • Use tracking to follow movement.
  • Use an orbit for a dimensional reveal.
  • Use handheld motion for informal creator-style footage.
  • Use rack focus to transfer attention between two visible subjects.

If you need two movements, make them sequential and give each enough time. Better still, generate two clips and cut between them.

Test camera and subject motion separately

When a result fails, change one variable. First generate the subject action with a locked camera. Then keep that action and add the camera move. This reveals whether the problem came from the performance, viewpoint, or combination.
